On Sunday, August 17, 2008 the third annual "Run for Ryan" charity motorcycle ride was held in honor of Ryan E. Doltz, a Mine Hill native who was killed in combat while serving with the New Jersey Army National Guard in Iraq on June 5, 2004. Doltz was killed when an improvised explosive device hit his vehicle on a road in Baghdad.
Hundreds of bikes lined up for the police escorted charity ride which began at 11am at Firemen’s Field in Rockaway Borough, NJ. It was reported over police radios, that as the last motorcycle cleared the starting line in Rockaway Borough, the first group of riders had just crossed the intersection of Berkshire Valley Road and Route 15 North in Jefferson Township. The hour and a half route continued north through Lafayette Twp in Sussex County, before making it’s way to Route 23. The final stretch followed Green Pond Road back to Firemen’s field for a post-run picnic with refreshments and live music by Last Night On Earth.
The 60 mile charity ride, organized by The Knights of Fire Chapter III., raised $11,000 to be split between the Sgt. Ryan E. Doltz Memorial Foundation ( founded by Doltz's parents and the Virginia Military Institute, from which Doltz graduated in 2002) and the St. Peter's Orphanage of Denville, a residential treatment facility for abused, abandoned or neglected adolescent boys.
The Knights Of Fire was formed in 1990 as a motorcycle club for firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians. Many of those who participated in the ride personally knew Ryan because he was also a certified emergency medical technician with Mine Hill's first aid squad.
