October 5-11, 2008 was Fire Prevention Week and this year's campaign theme was "Prevent Home Fires!" Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity to call attention to the importance of fire safety, especially in the home, and to honor our Nation's firefighters. Across our Nation, firefighters put themselves at risk to protect our communities, and their selfless dedication has saved countless lives. During Fire Prevention week members of Jefferson Township Fire Department Company # 2 visited Jefferson day care centers, kindergarten and elementary schools to make sure our younger residents were being educated on the importance of fire safety. Firefighters brought a firetruck and their full turn out gear ( including S.C.B.A - Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) with air bottle and face mask, for the children to get an up close and personal view of what a firefighter would look like when responding to an emergency in their home. Part of the demonstrations that were presented included fire safety tips and the importance of having and practicing a home fire escape plan.
On October 8, 2008 Jefferson Township Fire Department Company No. Two hosted their 2nd Annual Fire Prevention Open House. Sparky the fire dog stopped by for a visit while members of company # 2 were on hand to answer questions and provide a tour of all the fire apparatus. A crowd quickly formed as firefighters performed a live vehicle extrication demonstration using the jaws of life tools to cut open a car. Firefighters use these tools when attempting to rescue someone who may become trapped in their vehicle as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Back inside Fire Headquarters, visitors were greeted with refreshments and provided fire safety information, fire hats, hand outs and coloring books for the children.
